Senator for Queensland, Glenn Lazarus, has today accused the Queensland State Government of ‘ripping off’ the people of Queensland with exorbitant electricity prices.
“Queensland State Government owned businesses Ergon and Energex have just released their financial statements for the year ending 2015 and their profits have doubled in twelve months,” Senator Glenn Lazarus said today.
“This is an absolute disgrace. The cost of electricity in Queensland is one of the highest in the world.
“Ergon’s profit before income tax in 2015 was $991 million compared to $421 million in 2014.
“Energex’ profit before income tax in 2015 was $733 million compared to $377 million in 2014.
“This means the Queensland State Government is gouging Queenslanders to fill its own coffers.
“The cost of electricity in Queensland is increasing every year. It is becoming so expensive that it is crippling the ability of businesses, farmers and industry to operate and stay in business.
“Businesses are having to pay so much for electricity that they can’t afford to employ staff.
“How is the state of Queensland supposed to grow and prosper when the Queensland State Government is crippling the engine room of this state’s economy.
“Householders are doing it tough as well. People are struggling to pay basic bills every week.
“The Queensland Government should be seeking to minimise the cost of electricity for the people of Queensland, not profit from it.
“Annastacia Palaszczuk and her Government need to apologise to the people of Queensland, reduce the cost of electricity immediately and distribute the 2015 profits from their electricity businesses back to the people in the form of a Christmas bonus.
“Someone needs to stand up for the people of Queensland and call out the price gouging for what it is.”
