A CAIRNS community legal centre is preparing to launch a social media campaign urging people to boycott a local hotel after the owners felled flying fox roosting trees.

Contractors yesterday began removing 11 trees from the Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort on Lake St, attended by a small group of protesters.

The Environmental Defenders Office of Northern Queensland has been a vocal advocate of the embattled inner-city flying fox colony, which largely comprises a threatened species.

The group is now plotting its own attack in the wake of  the clearing of the 11 trees.

“Attempts to make the hotel operators honour their own environmental policies have failed so we have no option but to launch a social media campaign to encourage people to boycott the Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort and other Accor properties until they take steps to restore the roost trees on this site and handover the vacant block on Aplin Street to the state to become a council managed parkland and reserve for flying foxes,” said EDO N
