Macau-based consultant Dr Sudhir Kale said the projects would have an unprecedented dependence on international visitors, and it would be “very, very difficult” to rely on the tourist dollar alone.

Dr Kale said he had undertaken a 2013 study into the potential for extra casinos in the Brisbane-Gold Coast area, and the current Broadwater proposal was “much larger” than he thought feasible.

The Aquis development could likewise struggle with visitor numbers in a market which sees two million tourists annually.

“Right now, hardly anybody is taking Aquis seriously,” said Dr Kale, an honorary professor at Bond University on the Gold Coast.

“They’ll need about 75,000 to 80,000 visitors a day given the number of tables they have and the number of slots. That’s quite ambitious.”
