Queensland Senator Jan McLucas has lost out in her bid for a fourth term in the federal upper house, leaving the door wide open for former Bligh government MP Murray Watt.

The Labor senator announced on Sunday she wouldn’t contest the next federal election after a three-week preselection battle.

Fairfax Media recently reported Mr Watt was firming in his bid to oust the 18-year Senate veteran for the coveted number one Labor spot on the ballot paper.

At the time Senator McLucas confirmed she was a candidate for the spot but wouldn’t comment further.

It’s understood the north Queensland-based senator pulled out after realising she didn’t have the support needed to gain preselection.

Watt likely top senate pick after McLucas drops out.
