CAIRNS and the Far North have been tipped to become home to more than 500,000 people by 2050 – double today’s population.

A Cummings Economics report says the region is the most populous in Northern Australia with 278,064 people and it is expected to more than double to 550,887 by 2050.

The report says the population of Northern Australia is now 1.3 million, nearly 6 per cent of Australia, with growth of another one million people to total 2.3 million in 36 years
