How’s this for an unusual music venue: Three concrete fuel tanks, built for the Royal Australian Navy in 1944 and carefully camouflaged against the Cairns rainforest to disguise them from enemies. The tanks held fuel for Naval ships right up until they were decommissioned in 1987. And today? Well, there’s not even the faintest whiff of fuel left, as the three tanks have been repurposed as spaces for art and live music.
Upcoming gigs at the Tanks include concerts by Jimmy Barnes, Mia Dyson and CW Stoneking. Be warned, though: the sturdy concrete tanks aren’t fitted out with air conditioning, so be prepared for a truly tropical experience
