is the Political Elite in Australia out of touch like in Westminister—–But the SNP leader, like Ukip’s Nigel Farage in England, has successfully tapped into the public’s utter disillusionment with an arrogant and incompetent Westminster elite that, increasingly, has nothing in common with the people it professes to represent. There are gaping holes in Alex Salmond’s case, from being unable to say which currency an independent Scotland would use to the prospect of the big Scottish banks and other major employers relocating to England in search of greater financial security.

But the SNP leader, like Ukip’s Nigel Farage in England, has successfully tapped into the public’s utter disillusionment with an arrogant and incompetent Westminster elite that, increasingly, has nothing in common with the people it professes to represent.

Voters on both sides of the border want politicians who understand having to juggle a family budget and listen to their concerns about mass immigration, Europe, healthcare and schools.

Instead, they get posturing over politically-correct obsessions like climate change and international aid.

Yesterday, instead of campaigning to preserve the union, MPs crowded into the Commons to enshrine in law David Cameron’s utterly misguided commitment to spend 0.7 per cent of GDP – around £12billion a year – on foreign aid, while budgets for policing and care for the elderly are cut at home.

Could there be a more glaring example of the warped priorities of this out-of-touch political class than diverting millions of pounds to corrupt kleptocracies, when the world is terrifyingly unstable, and our Armed Forces are being slashed for lack of funding?

Once, MPs were respected for having first forged successful careers outside politics.

Now both the Cabinet and Opposition frontbenches are stuffed with former special advisers and party placemen, most of whom have never had a job in the real world.
