THE fate of inner-city flying foxes hangs on federal approval after the Cairns Regional Council voted to allow tree felling at the site.

Councillors yesterday gave Novotel Oasis Resort the green light to remove 11 mango and fig trees from the 1.4ha block of land in Cairns CBD.

Several trees are known roosts for the spectacled flying fox, a species found only in north-eastern Queensland and protected under federal law.
