THE proponents of a $9 million cancer respite centre in Cairns have given up hope of government funding and are going it alone.

Committee for Oncology Unit Cairns Hospital chairman Charlie Woodward said the aim was to start the first stage of the COUCH Cancer Health and Wellness Centre at Manoora in March next year.

He said the cost was estimated at $1 million which would involve fundraising, loans and guarantees.

“There’s no government funding and we will have to rely on private funding. They (governments) are all crying poor,’’ Mr Woodward said.
