The Mackay Regional Council says it has consulted local retailers over a proposed $17 million redevelopment of the north Queensland city centre.
Council will lodge an application to the Federal Government under the Regional Development Australia Fund to cover half the cost of the project, while the sale of council assets will contribute the other half.
Upgrades to public areas on Victoria and Wood streets, as well as improvements to the Pioneer Shire Building, have been planned and will need to be be completed by 2016.
Mayor Deirdre Comerford says a meticulous planning process over the past 12 months will boost the council’s chances of a successful application.
“They’re very strict with the criteria, you’ve got to show how you’ve engaged with the community,” she said.
