As pointed out by many the exercise once again reflects the Council’s manipulation of the Community Engagement Exercise -similar to threcent, supposed consultation, on the Grafton SAtreet Chinese Hereitage Trail.

Inthis exercise we have an attempt at diverting community opinion on a “no traffic City Place” to a virtual pipe dream without significant funding. The no option principal adopted by the planners is biased and perhaps dishonest.

We should be all working towards a prepferred community model developed throgh interaction of ideas and best outcomes

The current process will not achieve acceptable results

I really want what is best for the future of Cairns and am appalled at the lack of transparent consultation of the community. It seems absurd that this process has apparently been overlooked when previous councils fought tooth and nail to create “City Place” as a town centre/pedestrian mall. I was horrified at the vandalism to the grand shady trees being replaced by “BBQ seats” and trees unsuitable to provide shade, but never ever imagined we could make it any worse. I am a qualified horticulturist, please get some mature trees planted, some awesome water features (natural looking cascades, not urinals) and proposed fountains and create something we can all be proud of, not another backward step, we need a city square in the heart of the city. We have already spent who knows how many millions on planning, but where is the public consultation, nobody ever asked me until now, and only through the Facebook medium. May we please get it right this time, my rates bill cannot fund too many more bad decisions by council, the councillors still get paid regardless, there, I have finally had a say! Cheers, Andrew.
