Tony Fung –Community work in Hong Kong—— Honorary Fellow A Citation from the Chinese University Hong Kong—–Mr Fung is deeply committed to public and community service. From 1988 to 2003 Mr Fung was a Delegate to the 7th, 8th and 9th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He was also a member of the Basic Law Consultative Committee, in which capacity he assisted in the collection of community opinions on the future constitution of Hong Kong.

Mr Fung is deeply committed to public and community service. Since May 1991, he has extended the missions of Operation Smile to China in collaboration with its founder Dr William P.Magee. In October 1991, Operation Smile China Medical Mission was founded in Hong Kong and Mr Fung was appointed Vice-Chairman. Over the past sixteen years, it has launched missions in 28 Chinese cities. About 9,300 children with cleft lips and cleft palates have received free

reconstructive surgery, which has given them back their smiles as well as their confidence. Mr Fung is especially concerned with the development of local business and business education. In 1988 he founded Hong Kong Economic Research with other eminent figures in the local business sector, with the aim of analyzing the economic challenges facing Hong Kong in 1990s, thereby providing long-term economic strategies for social development in the twenty-first

century. It commissioned SRI International to study and publish a research report entitled Tasks for the 1990s. As a man of vision, Mr Fung immediately proposed the establishment of the Pearl River Delta Economic Alliance to coordinate and enhance cooperation among Hong Kong, Macao,

Shenzhen and Guangzhou in infrastructure projects and investments. He served as Vice-Chairman and Member of the Council of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited from 1988 to 1990 and then the Council Member from 1994 to 1997, and is now a member of the General Committee of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce
